Just got word from a High School classmate of mine about a film he’s been working on. It looks really remarkable — “The Pursuit of Equality.”
You know, I got some hard stares and puzzled comments from friends and strangers in October and November of 2003 when I wore my “Newsom for Mayor” button around town. The way things have unfolded since Newsom’s election goes to show that poltiics, like life, is complex and nuanced. Overall, in my view, Newsom has had a very positive impact on San Francisco in his year-and-almost-one-half in office. No, things are certainly not perfect here in the City of St. Francis. But it seems to me that Newsom is doing his utmost and making good things happen here in San Francisco. I’ve devoted two entries to criticizing our Board of Supervisors, so let me say a good word for our Mayor — Gavin Newsom. It’s all about that progress, not perfection. So, keep on rockin’, Mayor Gavin.
And, man, I think it’s hilarious, though incorrect, the way some know-it-all national Democratic “heavyweights” (elected and media) decided to blame Gavin Newsom for John Kerry’s defeat in November.
Nope, sorry, guys and gals — Kerry earned that defeat all by himself.
Anyhow, “Pursuit of Equality” looks like a super-interesting film. And I am really proud of my classmate Geoff Callan for getting it made and putting this story out there. Geoff was able to get the “behind the scenes” footage of what was going on in the Mayors office before, and during, the whole same-sex-marriage rollercoaster ride.
“The Pursuit of Equality” will have its World Premiere screening at the San Francisco International Film Festival on April 24th at 6:30 PM at the Castro Theater. You can reserve your tickets here. See you in the popcorn line.

Right on, I’ll be there!
PS. A word about your comments section — you might want to switch the code base of The Golden Gate to blogger (or otherwise) since only registered people to the site can write comments. By the time they get to a login page I’m sure a bunch assume ‘just not write.’ Of course, if you don’t really care for more comments, best to make it harder.
Just my .05.
